The international labour organization’s statistics show that an estimated 40.3 million victims are trapped in modern-day slavery. Of these:
24.9 million were exploited for labour, 15.4 million were in forced marriage.
1 in 4 victims of modern slavery are children.
There are 5.4 victims of modern slavery for every 1,000 people in the world.
Women and girls are disproportionately affected by forced labour, accounting for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% in other sectors
Today, September 23rd, 2021, marks the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children.
It was established by the World Conference of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Persons in coordination with the Women's Conference that took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in January 1999 and was organized by the International Coalition against Trafficking in Women.
The date, September 23rd was set, since in September 1913, in Argentina, the first law (Palacios Law) against commercial exploitation of children was enacted.
